Charitable donations are one of the spiritual cornerstones of Islam. Whether it’s Zakat or Sadaqah, all Muslims are expected to show a degree of generosity throughout the year.

But what precisely is Sadaqah and how do you give it? Here’s a brief overview of Sadaqah and everything you need to know.

What Is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity done to benefit others or please Allah (SWT). In fact, it’s one of the easiest ways to help those in need.

Sadaqah is a charitable act you volunteer to do for someone else, out of love, compassion or generosity. It doesn’t have to be money though – there are a range of different types of Sadaqah and charitable acts you can do that won’t cost you a penny. This means you don’t have to be rich to give Sadaqah.

When Should I Give Sadaqah?

For anyone interested in giving Sadaqah, you might be curious as to when you should give it. The good news is there’s no specific time to give Sadaqah – you’re free to give it at any time throughout the year.

But if you want to maximise your rewards from Sadaqah, a good time to do is during Ramadan since the rewards and blessings from good deeds are multiplied many times during this month.

What Is the Difference between Zakat and Sadaqah?

There are numerous forms of charitable giving in Islam, but Zakat and Sadaqah are the most prominent two. While both are encouraged, they’re still different.

Zakat is an obligatory act of charity that needs to be paid each year by every eligible Muslim so long as they meet the Nisab threshold. In fact, Zakat is so important that it’s even one of the fundamental Five Pillars of Islam, alongside Shahadah, Salat, Sawm and Hajj.

Sadaqah, on the other hand, while recommended and highly encouraged, is not obligatory. Instead, it’s completely voluntary, but brings with it a range of benefits and blessings for both the recipient and the donor.

What Are the Benefits of Sadaqah?

One of the main benefits of Sadaqah Jarriyah is that the rewards are so great that they can even continue to benefit you long after you pass away and for as long as the impact of your Sadaqah can be felt by the recipients. This is why many perform acts of Sadaqah on behalf of loved ones who have already died, allowing them to receive benefits even in death.
